How We Work With Your Insurance
What it means to see an out-of-network dentist
Most PPO plans — including Delta Dental, MetLife, Cigna, Aetna, and Blue Cross Blue Shield — pay out-of-network benefits at a similar rate to in-network: typically 50% to 80% of the fees they would have paid in-network.
A real example
Sample new patient comprehensive exam with full diagnostic imaging and dental hygiene — our fee: $551. A typical Anthem PPO plan reimburses approximately $405. Your effective out-of-pocket: approximately $146.
Who we’re a good fit for
- Patients who want to be treated as a person, not a code
- Patients seeking cosmetic dentistry, complex restorative care, full mouth rehabilitation, or implants
- Patients who value craft and outcomes over insurance-driven shortcuts
- Patients comfortable paying at the time of service and waiting approximately two weeks for insurance reimbursement
Who we’re probably not the right fit for
- Medicaid patients — we are not a Medicaid provider. For Medicaid coverage in the Richmond area, we recommend the VCU School of Dentistry or another local Medicaid provider.
- Patients seeking strictly in-network pricing. If lowest cost is your top priority, an in-network provider may serve you better.
FAQ
Do you take my insurance?
We’re out-of-network with all insurance plans, which means we don’t contract directly with them — but we file claims as a courtesy and your insurance still reimburses you. For most PPO plans, your out-of-pocket cost is comparable to (or only slightly higher than) what you’d pay at an in-network office, and you get to be seen by a dentist whose only obligation is to you.
What if I have Delta Dental or FEB Blue?
Delta and FEB Blue operate differently from other plans. Patients with Delta pay our fees in full at the time of service, and Delta mails the reimbursement check directly to you, typically within two weeks. Our office manager is happy to walk you through what to expect based on your specific Delta plan before your first appointment.

Case Study #1
Overview of Case: This wonderful patient was dissatisfied with the uneven edges and color of her upper teeth. We always work with the end in mind. To this end, the design phase is critical. Our initial design lengthened the teeth at the edges, reversing the wear, and increased the height in some areas at the gumline, restoring the lost space due to shifting. The final result is very natural and fits the patient's smile and face well. We were so happy this patient trusted us to provide this care!
Case Study #2
Overview of Case: This wonderful patient came to us as a referral from a local oral surgeon. Her lower teeth were painful and mobile due to gum (periodontal) disease. We developed a plan that transitioned our patient from fixed appliances to her final hybrid. The final prosthetic consists of a high-performance polymer and individual crowns for maximum esthetic, fit, and feel. This entire process took about six months, and the patient was thrilled with the final result!
