Dental Crowns in Richmond, VA

Dental crowns are a safe and effective method for repairing teeth that have become weakened or damaged. Dental crowns can be used to correct a variety of issues, including correcting teeth that are cracked, irregularly shaped, unusually small, or worn. Dental crowns can also be used as part of dental implant and root canal therapy or as an alternative to a filling when the decay is widespread. Although dental crowns can be made from a variety of materials, at Capital Dental Design we encourage our patients to use porcelain crowns, as this material creates a more authentic look and offers the most optimal aesthetic benefits. They are also very durable, which is why we recommend using them for all teeth, including back molars.

Regardless of your reason for needing dental crowns, the end result will be a beautiful smile that will enhance your facial features, take years off your appearance, and give you greater confidence. Dental Crown Process

The dental crown process will begin with an initial consultation, during which Dr. Forbes will evaluate and scan your mouth to determine if dental crowns are the right treatment option for you. If so, Dr. Forbes will take pictures of your smile and evaluate the shape and color of your tooth so the restoration will look and feel natural and not disturb your bite alignment. Next, we will numb the tooth in order to reshape it to accommodate the restoration. Dental sedation is also available to ensure you experience minimal discomfort and are able to remain relaxed while the procedure is performed.

Once your tooth is prepped, we will take and send impressions to our partner lab where your porcelain crown will be designed. While the crown is being crafted, we will place a temporary cap so you can continue eating a regular diet and avoid discomfort. Once your crown is finished, we will remove the temporary cap and secure the permanent crown using composite and a curing light to bond the crown in place.

Advantages of Dental Crowns

There are several unique and important advantages to dental crowns, which include the following:

  • Dental crowns correct numerous problems at once, eliminating the time and expense that would be necessary for treating additional issues that may develop, such as tooth extraction
  • Diseased tissue is removed as part of the procedure, which can stop the spread of bacteria and decay.
  • Dental crowns are available in a range of colors that guarantee your smile looks natural and sparkles.
  • Designed to match the curvature of your gums, shape of other teeth, and overall shape of your face so the crown looks and feels natural
  • Provided you take good care of your teeth and schedule regular dental examinations, your dental crown will last many years
  • Increases the overall strength of your tooth, which reduces your risk of developing oral health issues in the future

Aftercare Instructions

Aftercare instructions will be provided following your dental crown procedure. It is important to closely follow these and the following instructions to reduce your risk of complications and have a fast recovery period. For the first few days following the procedure, it is especially important to avoid chewing on hard foods or eat chewy foods, such as caramels and chewing gum.

Once you have fully recovered, you can resume normal hygiene practices, although it may be possible that the reason the dental crown was necessary in the first place is that you have not been taking proper care of your oral health. Make a habit of brushing and flossing your teeth twice daily and follow a balanced diet that is not overloaded with foods that are sugary or acidic. Additional steps you can take include drinking more water, especially after every meal and using a mouthwash and/or fluoride toothpaste.

Finally, the most important step you can take to preserve your oral health and avoid the need for procedures like dental crowns is to schedule a regular examination with us at least twice a year, or with greater regularity if you are at an increased risk of developing oral health issues. These visits ensure that Dr. Forbes can evaluate your oral health and identify issues before they develop into something worse. They also allow us to perform one of our three types of dental exams: a limited exam (for specific concerns), comprehensive exam (thorough examination of your overall oral health followed by treatment recommendations), or our signature exam, which includes the comprehensive exam as well as a full head and neck exam and ideas for a Digital Smile Design.

Cost of Dental Crowns

Several factors will determine the total cost of your dental crown procedure, such as the number of dental crowns needed, whether multiple procedures and appointments are necessary, if dental sedation is necessary, and whether the procedure is covered (and if so, how much) by your dental insurance plan. Prior to scheduling any procedure, we will discuss the anticipated costs, verify your benefits (if applicable) to determine out-of-pocket costs, and answer any questions you may have about billing.

If you are not covered under a dental insurance plan, or if you are simply interested in saving money, consider joining the Capital Dental Design Membership Plan. Although we make every effort to keep our services affordable for all patients, joining our membership plan allows us to save you even more money by covering the cost of preventive care such as cleanings, exams, and routine x-rays. We also offer discounts of 10-15% on other dental services offered at our clinic. To learn more about our membership plan, payment options, or anticipated costs, contact our office today!
