Denture Process

The denture process will begin with an initial consultation, during which Dr. Forbes will evaluate and scan your mouth to determine if dentures are the best treatment option for you. Although dental implants tend to be the best option for patients with missing teeth, there are times when, due to medical reasons or financial constraints, dental implants are simply not an option, in which case we are happy to fit you with customized high-quality dentures that look natural and fit comfortably.

Prior to fitting you for your dentures, it may be necessary to extract remaining teeth. Once your gums have healed from this process, we will discuss your aesthetic preferences for your dentures, such as their shade, shape, and size. If you would like your dentures to resemble your original teeth, please bring in a picture so we can make the necessary adjustments. Once this is determined, we will take impressions of your gums and any remaining teeth and send this information to our partner lab, where your dentures will be made. Once your dentures are ready, you will return for a follow up visit to test the fit of your dentures, ensuring that they are snug against your gums, feel comfortable, and look the way you want them to. If your dentures ever cause pain or discomfort, contact our office as soon as possible so we can make adjustments.

Advantages of Dentures

If you are missing most or all of your teeth and considering what treatment option is right for you, there are several unique advantages to dentures compared to other treatment options to consider, which include the following:

  • Health: Facial muscles and structures receive essential support from dentures.
  • Improved function: One of the biggest benefits to getting custom dentures is the improved functionality in being able to chew foods. Custom fit dentures will also improve your speech.
  • Improved comfort: Although dentures were originally made to return patients ability to chew, modern dentures are now customized to the patient’s mouth, which has significantly improved comfort and reduced slipping.
  • Affordability: Dentures are the most cost-affordable treatment methods for missing teeth.
  • Fast results: Unlike dental implants, which can take several months to complete, dentures provide results much faster and require fewer clinical visits.
  • Aesthetics: Our top-quality dentures are designed to give you a natural looking smile.

Denture Cleaning and Oral Hygiene

It is important to take good care of your dentures to ensure they look their best, continue to be comfortable, and are clean. This includes removing your dentures after eating, cleaning your cheeks, tongue, and the roof of your mouth whenever removing your dentures, brushing your dentures daily, and soaking your dentures overnight.

In addition to proper maintenance of your dentures, the most important step you can take to preserve your oral health and continue enjoying comfortable dentures is to schedule a regular examination with us at least twice a year, or with greater regularity if you are at an increased risk of developing oral health issues. These visits ensure that Dr. Forbes can evaluate your oral health and identify issues before they develop into something worse. They also allow us to perform one of our three types of dental exams: a limited exam (for specific concerns), comprehensive exam (thorough examination of your overall oral health followed by treatment recommendations), or our signature exam, which includes the comprehensive exam as well as a full head and neck exam and ideas for a Digital Smile Design.

Cost of Dentures

Several factors will determine the total cost of dentures, such as whether preliminary procedures such as tooth extraction are necessary prior to fitting you for dentures and whether dentures are covered (and if so, how much) by your dental insurance plan. Prior to scheduling any procedure, we will discuss the anticipated costs, verify your benefits (if applicable) to determine out-of-pocket costs, and answer any questions you may have about billing.

If you are not covered under a dental insurance plan, or if you are simply interested in saving money, consider joining the Capital Dental Design Membership Plan. Although we make every effort to keep our services affordable for all patients, joining our membership plan allows us to save you even more money by covering the cost of preventive care such as cleanings, exams, and routine x-rays. We also offer discounts of 10-15% on other dental services offered at our clinic. To learn more about our membership plan, payment options, or anticipated costs, contact our office today!

If you have not joined us as a patient yet and/or if you would like to schedule an appointment to determine whether dentures are right for you, contact us today online or call us directly at (804) 320-8894.
