Implant Supported Bridges in Richmond, VA

Implant supported bridges are an effective restorative dentistry option that are often recommended for patients missing one or more teeth. Having a missing tooth or teeth can negatively impact your life in so many ways. You can’t enjoy all the foods you once did, your speech becomes altered, and oftentimes people with missing teeth feel self-conscious and experience lowered self-esteem. While there are other treatment options for correcting missing teeth, such as dentures, they do not provide the same natural look and feel as implant supported bridges and also do not stop the loss of jawbone and/or additional teeth.

At Capital Dental Design in Richmond, we can restore your beautiful smile and ability to make full use of your teeth. Implant Supported Bridges Process

The implant supported bridge process will begin with an initial consultation, during which Dr. Forbes will evaluate and scan your mouth to determine if you are a viable candidate for implant supported bridges.

If it is determined that implant supported bridges are the best treatment option for you, Dr. Forbes will use ultramodern imaging to determine the strongest, densest places in your jawbone to place the titanium posts. Following this, you will need to return an additional two to four times to complete the process. In some cases, it may be necessary to extract a tooth or teeth and/or perform a bone graft for patients who have lost too much jawbone to adequately support an implant.

Prior to placing the titanium post that will support your bridge, we will numb the area where the implant will be placed. Dental sedation is also available to ensure you experience minimal discomfort and are able to remain relaxed while the procedure is performed. Once you are comfortable, we will make small incisions in your gums and place the titanium posts. The titanium posts will require time to fully fuse with your jawbone (3-6 months).

Following these preparatory steps, impressions of the shaped teeth are made and sent to a laboratory, where your customized bridge will be made to match the color of your surrounding teeth and fit comfortably. During this time, a temporary bridge may be fitted to protect your teeth. Once your bridge has been constructed, you will return for one final visit, during which your permanent bridge is placed, and any modifications are made to ensure the fit is comfortable and the look of the bridge is natural and to your liking.

Aftercare Instructions

Aftercare instructions will be provided following placement of your implant supported bridge. It is important to closely follow these and the following instructions to reduce your risk of complications and have a fast recovery period. If you experience temperature sensitivity, using a sensitive-formula toothpaste may help alleviate this sensitivity.

Once you have completed the healing process, you can begin to take care of your implant supported bridge just like your natural teeth. Brush and floss around the bridge twice daily (at least) and follow a balanced diet that is not overloaded with foods that are sugary or acidic. It is also important to avoid foods that are sticky, crunchy, or hard, as they can damage the bridge. Additional steps you can take to preserve the health of your implant includes drinking more water, especially after every meal and using a mouthwash and/or fluoride toothpaste.

Finally, the most important step you can take to preserve your oral health and avoid the need for additional procedures is to schedule a regular examination with us at least twice a year, or with greater regularity if you are at an increased risk of developing oral health issues. These visits ensure that Dr. Forbes can evaluate your oral health and identify issues before they develop into something worse. They also allow us to perform one of our three types of dental exams: a limited exam (for specific concerns), comprehensive exam (thorough examination of your overall oral health followed by treatment recommendations), or our signature exam, which includes the comprehensive exam as well as a full head and neck exam and ideas for a Digital Smile Design.
