What is the Crown Lengthening Procedure?

Crown lengthening is a procedure that is often used in conjunction with restorative treatment! It can also be used to correct a gummy smile which is when not enough tooth structure shows below the gum line, making your teeth appear small. During crown lengthening, excess gum tissue is removed and re-shaved and underlying bone tissue may also be removed if necessary. This allows more tooth structure to become visible above the gumline.

When used in preparation for a crown or other restorative treatment, crown lengthening achieves the necessary tooth structure that allows your dentist to properly bond your restoration to the tooth. This treatment is often recommended for patients who have tooth decay or have broken a tooth below the gumline.

Crown Lengthening Procedure

Crown lengthening is a relatively simple outpatient procedure that is performed using local anesthetic and usually takes less than an hour, depending on the number of teeth being treated. A periodontist is the dental professional that will perform this procedure for you.

To begin, your dr. will make a small incision in the gum tissue in order to access the underlying bone structure. They will then remove and/or reshape the bone and replace the gum tissue, contouring where necessary and stitching the tissue in place. Your surgery will be finished with a surgical dressing to protect the stitches and the area as it heals.

If neighboring teeth need gum contouring to even your gum line, your periodontist will take care of that during this procedure as well.

Possible Risks and Complications

As with any surgery, there is a risk of infection but your doctor will prescribe antibiotics which should be taken in full to prevent any problems. It is normal to see a bit of bleeding immediately following surgery but if you experience bleeding that will not stop, it is essential that you see your periodontist as soon as possible.

You can also expect to experience a bit of sensitivity to hot and cold foods and beverages but this should subside on its own over a couple of days.

Recovery After Crown Lengthening

Postoperative care after crown lengthening procedure is much like that of any oral surgery. You will need to take extreme care when brushing and flossing, avoiding the area until your periodontist clears you to get back to your regular oral care routine. You will also need to make some dietary changes for a few days, sticking to soft foods that are not too hot. It is also important that you avoid using tobacco products or consuming alcohol until your post op follow up appointment.

You may find it beneficial to use ice packs to help with swelling the day after surgery. Any pain medications that your doctor prescribed should be taken only as needed but it is crucial that you take all antibiotics in full to avoid infection. Full healing time can take up to 12 weeks. Your periodontist will let your dentist know when you are ready for your dental restoration.
