Cost of Tooth Fillings
If you suffer from tooth decay, your dentist may recommend that you have a filling placed. A dental filling is often done with a composite resin material that is tooth colored so it is not even noticeable! Depending on the extent of decay, tooth fillings can usually be completed in one visit in under an hour.
Though most dentists and patients choose to use tooth color to composite material, fillings can also be made using base metals which are much more durable but since they cannot be colored to match your teeth, are really only appropriate for molars.
How do I know if I need a filling?
It is entirely possible to have decay in your teeth without having any symptoms. That is why it is extremely important to visit your dentist regularly for routine professional cleanings complete with annual x-rays. The x-rays can help your dentist identify areas in your mouth that have decay that they may otherwise not be able to see, such as between teeth.
Symptoms of a cavity include sensitivity to temperatures and sugar, and sometimes pressure or pain when chewing. If your dentist finds a cavity, it is important that you proceed with treatment before the decay spreads and requires more extensive treatment. Left untreated, a simple one surface cavity can rapidly turn into a tooth that needs a dental crown or even a root canal before a crown.
What is the procedure for a tooth filling?
Before beginning any treatment, your dentist will make sure that the area is numb with a local anesthetic shot. Then they will use electric tools to drill the decay out of the affected area. Once the decay is completely removed, the tooth is cleaned and dried and your dentist will place the filling material in the void and cure it with an ultraviolet light. After the cavity is filled, your dentist will smooth and polished the area and have you bite down on articulating paper to identify any areas that need to be refined.
Caring for Tooth Fillings
You will be able to resume normal activities and dietary habits immediately after your filling procedure. You will be warned to take care with hot foods so that you do not burn your mouth or bite your tongue or cheek until the numbness wears off, which can take a few hours.
It is completely normal for you to experience minor sensitivity and soreness until the area calms down after being worked on. If sensitivity does not subside within a couple of weeks, call your dentist for a follow up so they can check your bite and make sure everything is sound. Continue with regular dental visits at least twice a year to maintain dental restorations and prevent future issues.
How much does a tooth filling cost?
The overall cost of treatment will depend on the extent of the decay. A cavity that covers more than one surface area will require more work and more composite material and therefore be more expensive. Before you receive treatment, your dentist will give you a treatment plan with an estimate of cost. It is important that you remember that this is only an estimate to give you a ballpark figure but if your dentist begins to drill and sees that the decay is deeper than previously thought, your cost could be more. Generally, the cost of one filling starts at $150.
If you have dental insurance, it may cover some of the cost of your fillings.
