When tooth decay is too extensive for a filling but does not warrant a full crown, inlays and onlays offer a conservative middle ground. At Capital Dental Design, our goal is always to protect and maintain as much of the original tooth structure as possible.
Dr. Forbes works with skilled ceramists who sculpt lifelike inlays and onlays from high-quality porcelain. Each restoration is designed to fit precisely within or over the damaged portion of the tooth while leaving healthy enamel intact.

Inlay vs. Onlay
An inlay fits between the cusps of a tooth, replacing the damaged portion without covering the biting surface. An onlay extends over one or more cusps, providing broader coverage for more significant decay. Both are fabricated in a laboratory from porcelain, ensuring a stronger and more precise fit than a composite filling can provide.

The Process
A two-visit process designed for precision fit and long-term durability.
Dr. Forbes evaluates the tooth, takes digital scans, and determines whether an inlay or onlay is the best treatment option. The goal is always the most conservative restoration that will fully address the damage.
The affected tooth is prepared by removing the decayed or damaged portion. A mold of the area is taken and sent to our partner ceramist for fabrication.
A temporary filling or putty is placed to protect the prepared tooth from bacteria and further decay while your permanent restoration is being crafted.
When the inlay or onlay returns from the laboratory, Dr. Forbes checks the fit, shade, and contour. The restoration is then permanently bonded to the tooth.
