Temporary Tooth Filling

Temporary Tooth Filling

A temporary richmond tooth filling virginia is often used immediately following root canal therapy. After the endodontist completes your root canal, they will fill the access hole with a temporary filling which will stay in place until your dentist can restore the tooth.

A temporary filling is perfectly safe to have for a few weeks but is not ideal for an extended period of time. If you have a temporary filling, it is important to see your dentist as soon as possible to have the tooth restored with a permanent dental restoration. While your temporary filling is completely safe, there are a few precautions you need to take to prevent damage to the tooth.

You will be able to eat and drink with your temporary filling that there will be some foods that your dentist will advise you avoid. Foods that are very crunchy or sticky and snacks such as gum or popcorn should be avoided until your permanent restoration is applied. It is also helpful to chew on the other side of your mouth to avoid damaging the temporary filling or the compromised tooth and to take care when drinking hot beverages.

Oral hygiene is another area where you will need to be cautious while you have a temporary filling. It is important to continue your regular oral care routine using extra care when brushing the tooth with the temporary filling. You should always use a soft bristled toothbrush but while you have a temporary filling, it is imperative that you brush extra gently over the compromised area. When you floss, it is possible to floss out the filling so if the floss becomes caught between teeth, do not pull it up but instead, to the side through the teeth.

While it is not ideal to have a temporary filling in for an extended period of time, sometimes life happens and you cannot see your dentist as quickly as you like. With the precautions you have been given, your temporary filling should be just fine.

In the event that you feel any sensitivity or anything unusual in the area, give your dentist a call so you can have them examine the tooth and make sure the filling is intact.
