Exposed Tooth Roots
There are various things that can cause the tooth’s roots to become exposed over time. As patients age, receding gums are more common. This can result in the exposure of the roots. The tooth contains the crown and the roots. The roots of the tooth connect the crown to the underlying bone.
In a healthy mouth, the roots of the teeth are covered with gum tissue and bone. The roots are incredibly sensitive when they are exposed and at risk for infection. Gum disease can be a common culprit for root exposure. With gum disease, the gums are often inflamed, swollen, and pull away from the teeth.
Tooth Instability
When the root is exposed, it is not uncommon for the tooth to become loose or feel unstable. A loose tooth should be taken very seriously, and patients should follow up with their dentist immediately to prevent tooth loss.
Causes
In cases where the tooth roots are exposed, it is vital to determine the cause of the issue. Below are common causes of tooth root exposure:
3. Aggressive Brushing or Flossing
4. Gum Recession from Aging
