Full Mouth Reconstruction Steps

Full Mouth Dental Implants

Dental implants are becoming an increasingly popular treatment option for the replacement of missing teeth. Patients who are missing all of their teeth in the upper or lower jaw can often benefit from full mouth dental implants. This restoration can also be called an implant-supported bridge or implant-supported dentures. Because dental implants look and function similar to the natural teeth, they are an excellent reconstruction option for many patients.

Steps

The dental implant procedure starts with the dental professional surgically placing the implant into the jawbone. The implant is a screw-like device that is often made of titanium. During the healing process, the implant will fuse to the jawbone and create an incredibly strong, secure base.

The dentist will then place a temporary crown during recovery. Healing caps can also be placed over the implant if a temporary crown is not being used. This protects the implant and ensures it heals properly. Lastly, the dentist will place sutures to secure the gum tissue.

The dentist will connect an abutment to the implant and finally attach the crown, bridge, or dentures. This gives the restoration a natural tooth appearance. In cases of a full mouth reconstruction, the dentist may opt to use a few strategically placed implants to support the bridge or dentures.

Advantages

Dental implants are considered to be the optimal tooth-replacement treatment option. They have many advantages compared to traditional dentures and resolve many of the challenges associated with dentures. Below is a summary of advantages associated with dental implants:

1. Strong and secure base

2. Fit securely in the mouth without slipping

3. Relatively easy to clean and maintain

4. Stimulate the jawbone to prevent bone loss

5. No dietary restrictions

6. Appear similar to the natural teeth

Full mouth denture reconstruction offers patients a restoration that has the appearance and function of natural teeth. Implants have superior comfort and last longer than traditional dentures. Because implants are so stable and secure, they do not slip out of place or require bitter adhesives. Patients who have full mouth implants also benefit from a healthy diet without restrictions.

Jawbone Stimulation

Dental implants replace the root of the missing tooth. As a result, the jawbone is stimulated with routine chewing and speaking. The stimulation aids in preventing bone resorption and bone loss. Traditional dentures fail to stimulate the jawbone and often result in bone loss and can even change the shape of the patient’s face.

Considerations

Treatments that include the use of dental implants will have a higher up-front cost. Most patients find the restoration to be worth the investment as the reconstruction is more attractive and functional. Patients often find the adhesive materials required for dentures to be uncomfortable and problematic. Denture patients commonly follow a restricted or modified diet. Lastly, dentures must be removed nightly for cleaning.
