Exposed Tooth Root
The tooth consists of the crown and the root. The crown is the portion of the tooth above the gum line, while the root is below the gum and attaches the crown to the jawbone. People are often surprised to learn that the tooth’s root is typically twice the length of the crown. This provides the tooth with stability. When patients have good oral health, their tooth root is not visible because it is surrounded by bone and covered by the gums.
In some cases, the tooth’s root becomes exposed. This can cause serious discomfort and oral health issues when it remains untreated. Below is a summary of the causes, symptoms, and treatments for exposed tooth roots.
Causes
Gum recession is the main cause of exposure of a tooth root. When the gum shrinks back or recedes, it exposes the root. In most cases, gum recession is caused by periodontal disease. This inflammatory condition is caused by the accumulation of harmful bacteria in the mouth.
The early stage of gum disease is gingivitis. This is caused by the build-up of plaque. The gums become irritated, red, swollen, and can easily bleed. Good oral hygiene can reverse the effects of gingivitis. When it is left untreated, it can result in periodontitis. This can cause damage to the supporting bone and the tooth’s root.
Other possible causes of gum recession and exposed roots include using too much force when brushing or flossing and trauma to the mouth.
Symptoms
One of the first signs of an exposed root is when the gums look lower than normal, or the teeth appear to be longer. When gum recession or an exposed root occurs in the back of the mouth, it may not be as obvious. Another common symptom is sensitivity to cold, hot, sour, acidic, or sweet things. Other signs include gums that are red, swollen, or easily bleed. In severe cases, the teeth can become loose or unstable.
The root is not covered with the protective layer of enamel that covers and protects the crown of the tooth. As a result, it is more susceptible to decay and vulnerable to bacteria.
At Home Treatments
The best way to prevent and stop gum disease and thus gum recession from getting any worse is to ensure you practice good oral hygiene, or Daily Self-Performed Care.
Good oral hygiene is the best treatment to stop the tooth’s roots from becoming exposed. This is critical for the prevention of gum disease and gum recession. Good oral hygiene includes the following:
