Are Black Triangles Normal
Every person has different teeth. The way the grow, the position they take in your mouth, the genetic composition within; every person is different. The way your teeth look may not be what you want, but it is normal. However, when tooth roots are exposed, it may cause deep pain or tooth loss, and we want to avoid that at all costs. Black triangles can be caused from multiple reasons, and each one has a unique solution you can explore with your dentist.
What causes Black Triangles?
* Tooth Shape- Some patient’s natural Tooth Shape will show a small gap near the gumline. This may be fixed with an adjustment, whether though braces or invisalign, or through bonding. If you have many teeth whose shape shows black triangles, you may even consider dental veneers.
* Lack of Dental Hygiene- Poor Dental Hygiene can cause so many different kind of dental health headaches. Whenever you are dealing with an issue in your mouth, or at your dentist appointment, you have to be honest with yourself about how diligent you are with dental hygiene. If you are not flossing regularly, there is bacteria destroying gum tissue in your mouth. The same goes for brushing, mouthwash, and regular cleanings and examinations.
* Genetics- Whether it is due to tooth shape, dental disease, or gum disease, genetics play a part in how your teeth look. This is why we would consider black triangles “normal”--there is nothing wrong with you. However, they may not be ideal or lead to positive dental health outcomes, so you may look to repair them.
* Over Brushing- Oftentimes patients try to overcorrect for forgotten hygiene in the past. They may try to brush 3-5 times a day, or brush too hard. You cannot “scrub” stains and plaque off your teeth, you have to work every day to clean them. Brush instead with soft and gentle circular motions, trying to move food and bacteria away from the gumline.
What can you do to fix Black Triangles?
With all conditions related to your dental health–see your dental care team. Make an appointment, get a cleaning, and then finish with an examination. It will be important to talk with them and work together, ask what conditions they think are causing your issue, and what options the recommend moving forward.
Possible Repair and Replacement Options for Black Triangles
* Veneers- Veneers are a huge replacement option because they are considered one of the best looking tooth replacement options. Veneers are usually porcelain white and meticulously constructed. They are attached to healthy tooth roots with some dental material removed from the side.
* Braces- Some Patients may simply require a tooth adjustment. Braces or Invisalign may be used to over time correct the angle or position of your teeth; filling in triangle gaps.
* Implants- Implants can be used to replace any or all your teeth. They stimulate the gums and jaw as they become a part of your mouth. Consider this option for really advanced teeth replacement.
