It’s hard to feel good about your smile when your pearly whites are neither pearly nor white. Some stains can even make it look like your teeth are never clean. Even regular brushing, flossing, and routine dental cleanings can’t always keep your teeth looking as nice as you might like.
What can help is one of two teeth whitening procedures we offer here at Capital Dental Design in Richmond. You can choose between in-office teeth whitening or veneers to achieve the photogenic smile you’ve been dreaming of.
Won’t over-the-counter tooth whiteners work?
You’ll get meager results from OTC whiteners, but even those results won’t last very long, and they won’t correct whatever is staining your teeth in the first place. Because some tooth discoloration can even be caused by your genetics, it’s simply impossible for any drugstore product to work deeply enough to get the results you’re looking for. It’s simply a question of how disappointed you’ll be. At Capital Dental Design you’ll experience the gold standard of dental whitening.
How does in-office tooth whitening work?
During your in-office whitening appointment we expose all your teeth, shield your gums and soft tissues, and safely apply a clinical-strength bleaching gel that you wear for up to 20 minutes. In some cases we’ll apply a second round of gel.
When done by an experienced cosmetic dentist, in-office teeth whitening is a safe, inexpensive option. The improved whiteness can last from one year to 3 years, depending on what you eat and drink after the procedure.

How do dental veneers work?
Veneers are porcelain “contact lenses” that are bonded directly to the front of your teeth. They allow very conservative alterations of tooth color, position, and proportion. We use digital imaging technology to help us design veneers that will look natural in your mouth. Our lab chooses a shade of porcelain as close as possible to your natural, unstained teeth.
Dr. Forbes then carefully places the veneers over your teeth, fitting them precisely before bonding them into place.

Which teeth whitening method should I use?
If the color of your teeth is your only concern, then in-office teeth whitening is both less expensive and faster than getting veneers. If you have other problems with your teeth, like gaps between your teeth, chips in your teeth, or unusually shaped teeth, then veneers may be a more appropriate solution.
Your results also will depend on your oral health. Dr. Forbes will examine your mouth first to see if you’ve got any problems that would make you a poor candidate for in-office whitening or veneers. Then he will then make recommendations based on your unique dental profile.
